| Capitalizing on the newly arisen need for providing a rapid response to public-health issues like flu outbreaks or bioterrorism, Integrated Warehousing Solutions (Downers Grove, IL) is offering what it says is the industry’s only “commercial-grade, out-of-the-box,” portable distribution-information system. Informally called the Go-Kit, the system is a stripped-down version of the company’s IRMS warehouse management system, according to Carl Brewer, president. The system is designed to meet the requirements of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Strategic National Stockpile (SNS), where up to 50 tons of pre-selected pharmaceuticals and medical supplies can be shipped on an emergency basis to support local relief efforts.
“Even though the CDC mobile system is designed for emergency response, you still want to be able to track the inventory and disposition of products,” says Brewer. The Katrina disaster on the Gulf Coast, during which locating and deploying medicines was a critical need, showed this, he says.
The Go-Kit runs on a ruggedized laptop computer, and can be up and running in minutes. It can communicate wirelessly both with a command center, and with handheld devices in use at a site. The system, which has been purchased by several local or regional emergency responders, will enable supplies to be monitored and shortages to be predicted.
